A suspected poacher from Chivi was allegedly attacked and killed by a crocodile while catching fish using a homemade canoe at Austrial Dam in Mashava, police confirmed yesterday. Acting Masvingo police spokesperson Nkululeko Nduna said the incident occurred on Sunday at around 6.30 AM.

He identified the deceased as Cladius Hwaire of Denga Village under Chief Chivi.
“I can confirm receiving a report of a crocodile attack which occurred at a dam in Mashava. The body of the deceased has not yet been retrieved but investigations are in progress,” said Asst Insp Nduna.

“We are still waiting for the sub-aqua unit personnel. The body is still missing and investigations are in progress.”
According to villagers, Hwaire woke up early in the morning and proceeded to Austrial Dam.

As he caught fish from his canoe, a crocodile emerged from his blind side and attacked him.
A villager said Hwaire was seen struggling with the crocodile by a passerby from Badza Village, Headman Watungwa.

The witness then rushed to Hwaire’s uncle, Edison Rusere in the same area and informed him of the incident.  Rusere teamed up with other villagers and went to the dam where they spotted the crocodile in the water but Hwaire’s body could not be located.
