MPILO Central Hospital authorities have resubmitted Samantha Shingirai’s case to the Medical and Dental Council for investigation following her death hours after giving birth two years ago. The latest development comes at a time when an inquest is being conducted at the Bulawayo Magistrates Court over the March 14, 2012 death.

Despite her urgent situation Shingirai who gave birth through caesarean section, was only operated on about eight hours after her admission.

Mpilo’s acting clinical director Dr Jephat Moyo told Chronicle yesterday that it was unfortunate that she lost her life giving birth and the hospital had engaged the council to investigate her case.

“Normally we review all maternal deaths every month and we submitted Shingirai’s case to the Medical and Dental Council for scrutiny. We had to resubmit the case now because members of the public are now eager to know what happened to her. We however have to consider that her death occurred when we had very few middle class managers to monitor our progress but we are happy to announce that we have recruited more future specialists who will help avoid such situations,” said Dr Moyo.

Dr Lawrence Mantiziba, the hospital’s chief executive officer said the institution had come up with programmes to improve service delivery by taking staff through a customer care course.

“We have re-oriented about 1, 600 of our staff members who have undergone a customer care course as part of measures to improve service delivery. We will have a community programme in June where we will engage the community to assist us identify shortcomings, if any, with a view to again improve service delivery,” said Dr Mantiziba.
