Fish poacher drowns in Gwanda dam

GWANDA North villagers were left in shock after a fish poacher drowned at Shake Dam in the Matshetsheni area under Chief Mbiko Masuku, last Tuesday evening.

The alleged poacher, identified as Mr Mpilisi Mhlanga (40) who hails from Tsholotsho is said to have gone to the dam in the company of a local villager, Mr Nhlanhla Maseko, both with the intentions of poaching for fish.

Mr Mhlanga is said to have unknowingly entered a deep end of the dam and drowned in the process. Matabeleland  South police provincial spokesperson, Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident.

“We discourage the public from fish poaching and from crossing flooded rivers especially during the rainy season, however, we encourage safe fishing methods,” she said.

His accomplice, Mr Maseko said the incident had left him shocked.

“Mhlanga said to me the dam was not deep enough and he could navigate the water. Much to my shock, he started drowning when he reached the middle of the dam while I stood at the edge of the dam,” said Mr Maseko.

Mr Mhlanga’s employer, Mr Zachariah Ncube said he was saddened by the loss.

“It is a sad loss to my family because the man had just worked for me for only a month. I am at a loss for words to express my grief,” he said.

Villagers interviewed said they have constantly warned young men in the area to desist from fish poaching.
The body was retrieved on Friday by villagers, under the supervision of police, after it was floating on the dam.
