A FISHING expedition by two sisters ended in tragedy after the duo drowned in Rusape River recently.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the death of Laiza Changwe (28) and Joyce Changwe (39), both of Midway Farm on the outskirts of Rusape.

“Laiza and Joyce Changwe were fishing along Rusape River when another woman only identified as Elizabeth noticed that Joyce was drowning and alerted Laiza to assist her. Laiza then tried in vain to rescue her sibling and ended up also drowning. Elizabeth reported the matter to the police,” he said.

In another case, a Lower Six student from First Choice Academy in Harare drowned at Nyangombe Falls. Prince Matiza was part of the 100 students and six teachers who had visited the Nyanga National Parks for a tour.

“The team from First Choice Academy gathered at their camping site and a group proceeded to the Nyangombe River and started swimming.

‘‘As they were swimming, Prince drowned in the river. One of their teachers, Elijah Matanhire, noticed this and quickly initiated a search party.

“Prince was found by Dennis Chando, another Form 5 pupil,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

Matanhire alerted parks officials who rushed to the scene and ferried Prince to Nyanga District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

No foul play was suspected.
