TANZANIA-born, Denmark-raised musician JJ Paulo is targeting Zimbabwe as part of his efforts to expand his international music career and reach new audiences across Africa.
The artiste, known for blending traditional East African sounds with contemporary Afrobeats and urban influences, believes his music has the potential to resonate with Zimbabwean audiences.
Speaking on the sidelines of the recently held Music In Africa Conference for Collaborations, Exchange and Showcases (ACCES), JJ Paulo said he was keen to introduce his sound to the local market, particularly through his latest single, Love From You.
“I’ve released a new single, ‘Love From You’, which I believe Zimbabweans will love,” he said.
His interest in Zimbabwe forms part of a wider ambition to strengthen his presence across the continent, building on the international career he has developed over the past five years.
JJ Paulo’s music is deeply rooted in his Tanzanian heritage, particularly the traditional Sukuma culture, which remains central to his artistic identity. He combines these influences with contemporary sounds, creating a fusion of African rhythms and trap beats.
The approach allows him to celebrate his cultural roots while appealing to audiences beyond Africa.
His energetic live performances have also helped establish his reputation on the international music scene. Having released three extended plays (EPs), he has earned several nominations in Denmark, largely in recognition of his stage performances.
He has performed across four continents at major festivals and music platforms, including Roskilde in Denmark, ESNS and Festival Amani in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
One of his career highlights was closing Europavox in France, where he performed before an estimated 15 000 people. He has also sold out Copenhagen’s iconic Store VEGA twice.
In 2023, his growing profile earned him the Danish Music Award for Live Performer of the Year.
Earlier this year, he was selected for the Danish Arts Foundation’s Young Artistic Elite programme, receiving DKK500 000 in support of his artistic development.
The recognition comes as he prepares to release his debut album in April 2027, a project expected to bring together the cultural and musical influences that have shaped his sound.
“I’m particularly excited about introducing my music to audiences across Africa, including Zimbabwe, when my debut album arrives in April 2027,” he said.
His plans to penetrate the Zimbabwean market come amid growing opportunities for cross-border musical collaborations and exchanges.
Platforms such as ACCES continue to connect artistes with promoters, festival organisers, record labels and other industry players, helping them explore new markets and build international networks.
With its vibrant live music scene and diverse audience, Zimbabwe offers JJ Paulo an opportunity to grow his following and explore collaborations with local artistes.
As preparations for his debut album gather pace, the musician is looking to make Zimbabwe an important part of his expanding African journey.
