Five years jail for attempted murder of fellow villager

A 22-year-old man from Filabusi has been sentenced to five years imprisonment for attempted murder after he assaulted a fellow villager with an axe causing serious head and eye injuries.

Proud Mathe from Chief Jahana area appeared before Bulawayo Regional magistrate, Mr Lungile Ncube, and was convicted of attempted murder.
The complainant, Bongani Mpofu, and the accused person are not related but they are from the same village, and they are of the same age, prosecutor, Mr Jethro Mada, said.

He told the court that on March 30, 2025 at around 9PM at Claremont 26 Mine, a place where they were involved in gold panning, Mpofu was asleep in his room when Mathe entered armed with an axe.

“The accused person struck the complainant once on the head and upper of the left eye with an axe,” said Mr Mada.
The court heard that as a result of assault the complainant sustained head injury and on the eye.

A report was filed to the police leading to the arrest of the accused person and the complainant was referred to hospital medical report.
