‘Flashback’ exhibition at Gallery Delta

A select collection of local paintings and graphics are on display at “Flashback” exhibition that opened on Tuesday at the Gallery Delta.
The exhibition that has 40 works from over 25 different painters takes one on a journey through the evolution of Zimbabwean artistic genius over the past 40 years.
Some of the titles of pieces on display include “”Love to Hate”, “Night Scape”, “Sick Hunter”, “Reflections”, Anonditadza I” and “Bathers with Strangers”.
The exhibition was officially opened by Switzerland Ambassador Luciano Lavizzari who applauded the art that explore African culture.

“Culture plays an important role in development cooperation and transition processes and artists are key drivers for social transformation,” he said.
Participating artists include Simon Back,Virginia Chihota, George Churu, Edsor Colaco, James Jali, Portia Zvavahera,Cosmas Shiridzinonwa, Webster Pasipanodya, Wallen Mapondera and Luis Meque among others.

The works cover the different aspects of culture including the social transformation that people have gone through over the past years.
In terms of culture, the paintings examine how fashion has changed with some paintings of people wearing suits and others with animal skin outfits.
Co-founder and director of the gallery, Derek Huggins said the exhibition was meant to look at art with a retrospective sight.

“We believe it is not only interesting historically but refreshing too for the public and artists to appraise this exhibition and take stock of past works and compare them with those of the present.

“It will be observed whether there is a decline or improvement in the standard of painting collectively or individually,” he said.
