ROBBERS broke into Njube High School armed with dynamite which they allegedly intended to use to blow up a safe. The five-member gang allegedly dragged the security guard into a classroom, tied him up and headed for the bursar’s office. The robbers’ nerves reportedly failed them as they fled without stealing anything after the security guard managed to free himself.
An official from the school told Chronicle the robbers left behind some sticks of dynamite and assorted tools of their trade.
“While in the process of cutting through the burglar bars at the bursar’s office, the security guard freed himself. He tried to flee from the scene and when the robbers saw him they panicked. They probably thought he was going to raise the alarm and fled as well,” said the official.
Chronicle visited the school yesterday and it was business as usual.
Staff at the school confirmed the incident but could not disclose any information, referring all questions to the Bulawayo provincial education officer, Dan Moyo.
Moyo said he had not received any report about the attempted robbery.
A police spokesman said: “We are investigating a report of a break in at the school. The robbers left dynamite and burglary tools. Based on their modus operandi, we’re following some leads that could result in arrests.”
In May, thieves broke into Kumalo Primary School and got away with more than $3,000.
They reportedly broke into the bursar’s office and sliced open two safes before fleeing with the money.
