GOVERNMENT aims to raise $320, 000 to complete pegging of about 2, 600 plots meant for resettlement of villagers recently displaced by floods on the Tokwe-Mukosi floodplain in Chivi District, a Cabinet Minister has said.Lands and Rural Resettlement Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora told Chronicle in Hwange on Monday that 10 teams were on site doing surveys and demarcations of the land for resettlement of affected families.
“We have moved villagers from bases to holding camps. As we complete pegging plots we will move them from holding camps.
“At present we are looking at pegging 2, 600 plots for the affected villagers and 10 teams are on the ground. Government is raising $320, 000 for surveying and demarcating these plots,” Dr Mombeshora said.
He said the country received excessive rains this year, which have resulted in flooding in some places.
“We underestimated the rains this season and never thought that there would be flooding because the rains have been poor over the years,” said the Minister.
“There was a programme in place to move the villagers from the basin but we have been forced to move them now before the land was demarcated. The land is there and they are not going back to the basin.”
President Mugabe declared flooding at Tokwe-Mukosi a national disaster last month after thousands of families were left homeless when rains washed away their homes and destroyed property.
