Zimbabwean-born, practising lawyer and entrepreneur, Brian Kudzaishe Mataruka, has won the Africa Leadership University Chairman’s Scholarship for 2020.
The co-recipient of the prestigious award, was Zimbabwean-born and Zambian- based social entrepreneur Tafadzwa Sasa.
Mr Mataruka is a partner at Gill, Godlonton & Gerrans, one of Zimbabwe’s leading law firms, where he is the leading mining partner and head of insolvency.
He is a non-executive director of Willdale Bricks, where he also chairs the human resources and remuneration committee. He sits on the boards of several leading private companies such as Aviation Ground Services, the only private ground handling company in Zimbabwe.
A leading entrepreneur, Mr Mataruka (pictured right) is a founding director of Umuzi Properties and Umhlaba Greenfields, which are construction and export agriculture companies respectively.
In recognition of his impact in the construction industry, Mr Mataruka was voted personality of the month by a Harare magazine in January 2018.
Umhlaba Greenfields is a success story of young African farmers who have been able to tap into the international horticultural export market that resonates with Government’s “Zimbabwe is Open for Business” mantra. The Chairman’s Scholarship celebrates the best of African business talent particularly within the professional and community leadership.
The Africa Leadership University School of Business is run from Kigali, Rwanda, and is a flagship business school whose objective is to build future African business leaders.
The ALUSB MBA programme is an Africa-focused world-class executive development programme offered in collaboration with a number of internationally recognised partners.
The university said the selection committee received thousands of applications from across the continent and selected six outstanding finalists for the award who each have an impressive track record of success in business and civil society.
Writing on its website, the university stated that “the chairman’s scholars were chosen on the basis of their outstanding professional achievements, their pan-African vision and their demonstrated leadership in uplifting their communities”.
Using African and international resource persons, the 20-month programme blends global best practices in business education punctuated with African case studies to deliver a tailored programme geared towards building critical skills essential for doing business in Africa.
The scholarship was awarded to the two Zimbabweans after a vigorous assessment process in recognition of their efforts in creating employment and excellence in business leadership.
The first Chairman’s Scholarship was won by Zimbabwean lawyer, Zanudeen Makorie who at the time was the company secretary of Riozim Limited.
The Zimbabwean flag continues to be flown high amongst professionals on the continent.
