The World Food Programme has given about 15 000 of Tokwe-Mukosi flood victims at Chingwizi a lifeline after unveiling a feeding scheme that will see 800 tonnes of cereals and vegetable oils being distributed.
Under the programme being implemented through partnership between WFP and Plan International, the families will receive enough food supplies for the next four months.
The move will bring relief to the camp dwellers who were battling severe food shortages owing to dwindling donations which forced Government to halve rations.
Each individual at Chingwizi will receive a 10kg bag of maize, 810ml of vegetable oil and 2kgs of peas once a month for four months.
Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Kudakwashe Bhasikiti, hailed the intervention by WFP and Plan International. Minister Bhasikiti said Government was grateful to the development partners for their timely intervention, which he said averted food crisis at Chingwizi camp.
“We are happy as Government that for the next four months our people at Chingwizi will be getting enough food supplies and the good thing is that every flood victim will receive an allocation meaning that those with bigger families will also get bigger shares,’’ he said.
Cde Bhasikiti said Government wanted to make sure the families were self reliant.
“Our goal is for the flood victims to be able to harvest their own crops next year and we will soon be giving them seed and fertilisers,’’ he said.
He added families would require food assistance until next year and Government will continue to assist.
