‘Food security top priority’

Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ending hunger and malnutrition through the implementation of the country’s economic blueprint, Zim-Asset.

Speaking at an event to commemorate the Global Day of Action on Nutrition in Harare yesterday, Ambassador Mary Mubi, the senior principal director in the Office of the President and Cabinet said fighting hunger and malnutrition remained a top a priority for the Government.

“No child should die of malnutrition because everyone has the right to food, clean and good environment,” she said.

“The Government remains deeply committed to reducing hunger and malnutrition.”

She said it was important to strengthen efforts to raise awareness on the country’s Nutrition Strategy as well as the implementation of strategies outlined in the ZimAsset economic blueprint.

Ambassador Mubi said the Office of the President and Cabinet will hold a multi-stakeholder workshop next month to discuss ways of enhancing communication of key strategies outlined in the ZimAsset national development plan.

Speaking at the same event, Ms Tholakele Khumalo, a legislator, said food and nutrition security is critical for the stability of the country.

“We should place the highest priority for all of us to tackle the issue of nutrition and fight malnutrition among children. There is a need for the Government to dedicate more financial resources towards nutrition and agriculture as a strategic intervention to eliminate hunger and malnutrition.”

Ms Khumalo said it was important for the country to promote indigenous food crops to enhance food and nutrition security,” she said.
