Football boss ‘holds’ onto donated equipment

SOUTHERN Region Women’s League boss Takundwa Chimundiya is allegedly holding onto equipment handed down by national football mother body Zifa meant for local women’s clubs in Bulawayo.

The issue came to light in a leaked WhatsApp group chat where club officials are questioning why the league boss remains mum about the existence of the equipment, a month after he received the consignment.

The officials accuse Chimundiya of making unilateral decisions without consulting clubs, who are the owners of the league that he heads.

Zifa spokesman Xolisani Gwesela confirmed that Southern Region Women’s League received a consignment of soccer balls, kits, medical and training equipment that includes cones and bibs.

“The chairman Chimundiya sent someone to pick up soccer balls, several kits and medical equipment in Harare in December, which is supposed to be handed down to the teams in the league. I’m surprised that he still has not acknowledged receipt of the equipment to the clubs, who are the rightful beneficiaries,” said Gwesela.

Chimundiya promised to get back to B-Metro Sport with a response but had not done so by the time of going to print.

“We are not even aware that he sent an outsider to pick up the equipment from Harare. The Southern Region Women’s League is run by an elected executive yet the chairman sees it fit to make decisions on his own. I’m not surprised if part of the equipment is not accounted for when it’s finally distributed to the clubs,” said a club official.

League secretary Killion Hadebe said they would call for an Annual General Meeting (AGM) where issues would be discussed and this season’s programme rolled out.

The Southern Region Women’s League draws its teams from schools such as Sobukhazi High and community owned sides like Highlanders Royals who are part of Highlanders Football Club, among others.
