“PLAY for Brian, he gave everything.”
The Zimbabwean football community stood still on Thursday, united in sorrow and respect, as hundreds gathered to say farewell to Warriors and FC Platinum midfielder Brian Banda, who died in a car crash on Sunday.
He was 29.
Banda was laid to rest at West Park Cemetery in Bulawayo after an emotional funeral service held at the Amphitheatre earlier in the day. The crowd, draped in jerseys of local teams, formed a moving tribute to a player, whose impact on and off the pitch far outweighed his years.
Speaker after speaker described a man of quiet strength and leadership, a footballer remembered not only for his skill but for his humility, dedication and the way he carried the game on his shoulders.
Zifa president Nqobile Magwizi, gave one of the most heartfelt eulogies:
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we gather here. No words or speech can encompass the pain of this talented player. To the wife and family, and the entire football community, I offer my condolences. The entire nation is with you during this time. He was not just a player. That he had the armband speaks highly of the respect he commanded.
He wore the national team jersey with pride. His story will be told and never forgotten,” said Magwizi.
FC Platinum head coach Norman Mapeza, described Banda as irreplaceable: “He was the rhythm, the heartbeat of the team, and did not only fly the FC Platinum badge but the entire country’s badge.”
Desmond Maringwa, president of the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ), added:
“We have lost a gallant son of football. He resembled myself. We have lost a big talent. It’s going to be difficult for coach Norman Mapeza, but please, play for Brian, he gave everything for FC Platinum.”
Zifa Southern Region chair Lloyd Munhanga, used the moment to reflect on road safety, urging drivers to be more responsible:
“He left an indelible mark in our football. His passing is tragic. Those who drive, please let’s drive safely to save lives. He left a positive mark on his teammates. On behalf of the region, I offer my condolences to the Banda family.”
Acting Premier Soccer League CEO Rodwell Thabe also paid tribute:
“We are devastated by the loss. He has been a shining example in the Premier League because of his humility and dedication. Let’s celebrate his life forever. There will be a moment of silence throughout our matches this weekend as we honour Banda. During these moments, let us take time to cherish and reflect on Banda’s life. Let’s remain united as a football community.”
Highlanders board member Elkanah Dube, speaking on behalf of the club, said:
“The midfielder has left a huge void in the football community.”
The turnout told the full story. Coaches, former teammates, club officials, supporters and dignitaries packed the venue and cemetery. Many wept openly, while others shared memories of a life cut short too soon.
Among those in attendance were respected coaches Garthly Chipuka, Mandla Mpofu, Melusi Mabaleka and Chipo Tsodzo. Clubs from across the leagues, including Hwange FC, Talen Vision, Zebra Revolution, Bosso 90, Ajax Movers, Mposa (Women’s Super League), Byo City, Byo Chiefs, and Bulawayo Warriors, came to pay their respects.
Legends like Madinda Ndlovu, Zenzo Moyo and Douglas “British” Mloyi stood quietly among the mourners, offering silent tribute to one of the game’s own.
Banda may no longer grace the field, but his passion, loyalty and love for the game will continue to echo through Zimbabwean football.
