Footballer (16) dies after saving penalty with his chest

A TEENAGE goalkeeper has tragically passed away after saving a penalty for his local club.

Edson Lopes (16) collapsed to the floor after stopping a spot-kick with his chest.

A video shows the young keeper in training falling to the ground in pain immediately after making the stunning save.

He was rushed to hospital in a car from the town of Maues in the Amazon rainforest.

The journey from the rural area was complicated and reportedly took 11 hours.

Lopes sadly died on his arrival at the hospital on January 5.

His family and the local community have been shocked by the tragic loss.

Lopes had no history of heart disease and supposedly lived an active lifestyle.

His brother Eliomar wrote on social media: “Today you touched all of Brazil, I never imagined it could be like this.

“You were a dedicated player and a child who was never sad, always happy.

“My brother, we are sorry to see you go, but you left doing what you loved most, playing football.”

The Lopes family wore the shirts of his favourite team Gremio as they carried his coffin.

Others penned touching tributes, saying: “May God comfort the hearts of your family and friends. He is watching over you all.”
Another added: “This boy was loved by all.” (thesun.co.uk)
