FORMER Ledgeback Safaris finance manager Godwin Ngonidzashe Mamhiyo has been granted US$1 500 bail while he awaits trial on charges of money laundering and theft involving almost US$1 million.
Harare regional magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa heard that Mamhiyo allegedly received over US$200 000 in stolen funds from Sithembinkosi Princess Precious Sibanda, the company’s current finance manager for Zimbabwe operations, with whom he was reportedly involved in an extramarital affair.
Sibanda, who appeared in court earlier this week on similar charges, is accused of diverting money from company accounts throughout 2023.
Prosecutors detailed that Mamhiyo used the illicit funds to buy a two-bedroom flat in Avondale and a Toyota Vitz (AFS 5257), a Honda Shuttle (AGI 7750), and a Honda Fit (AFO 0857) for a ride-hailing business.
He allegedly became a co-owner of the Avondale property without making any financial contribution to its acquisition.
The scheme unravelled on September 4 this year when Ledgeback Safaris officials discovered the missing funds and alerted the police.
Investigators have since recovered property valued at US$553 900, including several vehicles and real estate linked to both suspects.
Mamhiyo was arrested on September 14 after Sibanda implicated him during questioning. The three vehicles allegedly bought with the stolen funds were recovered from his possession.
The total value of stolen funds now amounts to US$998 581, with investigations ongoing.
Both Sibanda and Mamhiyo face charges of money laundering and theft.
Mamhiyo is scheduled to return to court for his next hearing later this month.
