FORMER Mashonaland West Governor, Faber Chidarikire, has been arrested for contravening the Firearms Act.
The 75-year-old was arraigned before Chinhoyi provincial magistrate, Langton Ndoreka, charged with failing to safeguard a firearm.
Chidarikire was fined $30 000 or he will serve a 30-day imprisonment should he fail to pay the fine.
Prosecuting, Tendai Tapi, told the court that Chidarikire is a holder of a revolver Tauras 357, serial number 16393, (Central Firearm Certificate Registry no 129257).
The court heard on May 18, this year, at around 8am, Chidarikire left his revolver inside the head board in his bedroom and left for the Chinhoyi main rank to conduct other businesses.
Upon his return, at around 8pm, he discovered that an unknown person had broken into his bedroom, using an object to gain entry, and stolen his firearm.
Chidarikire then filed a report at ZRP Chinhoyi Central.
A team of CID detectives attended the scene and discovered that Chidarikire was keeping his firearm inside the headboard drawer, instead of the gun cabinet.
He failed to properly safeguard the firearm in question.
Chidarikire’s act was unlawful, which led to his arrest, and subsequent prosecution.
