Harare mayor Mr Bernard Manyenyeni has said cities and towns in Zimbabwe should take advantage of former mayors and exploit the vast wealth and experience they have to better service delivery. He was speaking at a luncheon he held for former Harare mayors Engineer Oliver Chidawu, Alderman Jabulani Thembani, Engineer Elias Mudzuri and Mr Muchadei Masunda.
“We think it’s an opportunity for the new mayor to compare notes with those who have served in office as mayors,” said Mr Manyenyeni.
“We also think it’s a resource base we should count on as citizens and residents of Harare. With your wealth of experience you could assist in a number of areas be they technical, conflict resolution, arbitration mediation, which we encounter in our times as mayors.”
Mr Manyenyeni said it was regrettable that other former mayors in post independence Zimbabwe like Alderman Tony Gara and Cde Solomon Tawengwa had died.
“We also think there are ideas you may assist us with particularly traditions we have lost over time,” he said.
“I notice some of streets are named after ex-mayors, council employees and ex-aldermen. In my view, those traditions should be re-examined and we should resume such practices.”
Eng Chidawu, Alderman Thembani and Eng Mudzuri pledged to work with the city officials to improve life in Harare.
