London — Four people were jailed on Tuesday for more than 10 years each for stabbing a retired Indian general in the neck while he was visiting London last year. Two men and a woman were convicted in July for what prosecutors called “a highly premeditated assault” on Lieutenant General Kuldeep Singh Brar as he walked with his wife in September 2012. A fourth defendant pleaded guilty.
Prosecutors said the attack on the 78-year-old was revenge for his role in the 1984 assault on Amritsar’s Golden Temple, in which more than 1 000 people were killed. Brar survived the stabbing attack.
Mandeep Singh Sandhu and Dilbag Singh were sentenced on Tuesday to 14 years in prison. Harjit Kaur was jailed for 11 years and Barjinder Singh Sangha —who pleaded guilty — received 10 years and six months.
Police said the group carried out reconnaissance of the area where Brar was staying ahead of the attack.
On the day of the assault, Kaur followed the general around London and sent cellphone updates to the others on their movements — allowing the gang to intercept Brar and his wife as they returned to their hotel. — AP
