Four people injured in commuter omnibus accident in Kariba

Four people were yesterday injured when the driver of the commuter omnibus they were travelling in from Heights to Nyamhunga in Kariba lost control and it veered off the road, hitting an electric pole before overturning and landing on its roof in a ravine.

The omnibus was carrying 18 passengers when the accident happened. Acting Officer Commanding Kariba District, Superintendent Saul Mhanqwa confirmed the accident.
“Four individuals sustained injuries and were taken to Kariba District Hospital for treatment,” Superintendent Mhanqwa said.
“Fortunately, they have since been discharged.”

Superintendent Mhanqwa urged drivers to exercise caution when navigating the treacherous terrain in Kariba.
“Recent statistics show that human error is the leading cause of road accidents in Zimbabwe,” he said.
“It is imperative that drivers take necessary precautions to preserve lives on these perilous roads.”
Road accidents are a significant concern in Zimbabwe, accounting for a high rate of fatalities and injuries.

According to the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, between January and September 2023, there were 38 482 road accidents countrywide, resulting in 1 545 deaths and 7 294 injuries. This translates to approximately 141 road accidents per day, with most incidents occurring on weekend nights and holidays, particularly during the festive season.
The main causes of road accidents in Zimbabwe include reckless driving, use of unroadworthy vehicles, speeding, and driving under the influence.
