Four sentenced to 36 years for possession of ivory

FOUR men have been sentenced to nine years each for unlawful possession of raw ivory.
Olieth Shumba, 36, Lovegod Mtokho, 26, Solomon Tarwakuona, 36, and Patrick Ndou, 47, were arrested on July 30 last year.

On Wednesday, the quartet appeared at Kwekwe Magistrate Courts before Magistrate Mildred Matuvi and Ethel Bhumure appeared for the State.

In a statement, police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) spokesperson, Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri, said:

“The continued exploitation of wildlife resources, especially endangered species, poses a significant threat to our natural environment and carries a mandatory 9-year jail term.

“Together, we can protect our natural heritage for future generations.”
