Bulawayo-born comedian Frank Chirisa has returned home after completing what he describes as the most rewarding experience of his six-year comedy career – an intensive tour of South Africa’s thriving comedy circuit.

Armed with a notebook full of jokes and a determination to test himself against some of the region’s best talent, Chirisa embarked on the tour on May 23. Over 17 consecutive days, he performed 18 times at comedy clubs and venues across South Africa, immersing himself in one of the continent’s busiest stand-up comedy scenes.

The tour provided him with opportunities to share stages, collaborate and network with some of South Africa’s leading comedians, including Thabiso Mhlongo, Tsitsi Chiumya and Shanray of the popular People Need Comedy podcast.

During his stay, Chirisa also collaborated with fellow Zimbabwean comedians Sima Chikavhu, Chik Aljoy and George Kuda on a comedy skit that explored the social tensions currently unfolding in South Africa.
Reflecting on the experience, Chirisa said the tour exceeded all his expectations.
“This was the best comedy experience in my six-year career as a comedian. I made new friends, new connections and new networks. I learnt a lot from performing every day in the busy comedy scene of Johannesburg.

“I also opened a show for Dr Hillary Okello on the Johannesburg edition of his Jokes From Far Away tour,” he said.

One of the highlights of the tour was the opportunity to perform alongside some of the continent’s most accomplished comedians.
“Across the various shows, I shared the stage with the likes of Loyiso Gola, Nicholas Goliath, Roni Modimola, Joey Rasdien and Kedibone Mulaudzi – all comedians who have achieved great success throughout their careers.
“It was an amazing experience rubbing shoulders with greatness. I really learnt a lot from being in those rooms, watching them perform and hearing them speak,” Chirisa said.

Beyond the performances, the comedian said the tour offered valuable lessons about the business and craft of comedy. Among the many encounters he treasures, a conversation with celebrated South African comedian Sifiso Nene stands out.
“One of my favourite and most memorable experiences of the entire tour was my interaction with Sifiso Nene. He shared with me the blueprint of being a successful comedian, as well as what I need to work on to improve my craft,” said Chirisa.

He also praised the welcoming nature of South Africa’s comedy community.
“The comedy culture in South Africa is amazing. The people there made sure that I was safe and embraced me as one of their own from the moment I arrived,” he said.

Having gained invaluable exposure, industry insights and new professional relationships, the rising comedian says he is already looking forward to returning to South Africa for future performances.
