From chaos to booming growth: 2nd Republic transforms Mazowe

A FEW years ago, Mazowe District was infamous for artisanal miners, who often made headlines for violent crimes, including murders and robberies. The area was regarded as a hotspot for societal ills, casting a shadow over its potential.

However, recent developments have transformed the district into an attractive destination, offering breath-taking scenic views and promising economic prospects.

Thanks to the initiatives of the Second Republic under President Mnangagwa, the Mazowe Rural District Council (RDC) is focused on modernising rural communities.

This effort aims to enhance productivity and spur socio-economic development, resulting in the emergence of new industries and economic hubs in the region.

Mazowe is experiencing a booming tourism sector, highlighted by attractions like the Mazowe Dam Resort and a Culture Village Centre that is under construction.

In addition, various wedding and conference venues are being constructed, further enriching the district’s offerings.

The ongoing dualisation of the Harare-Mazowe highway is set to solidify this growth, making the area more accessible and appealing to tourists and investors.

Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland Central, Christopher Magomo, said the road project is significant in boosting development in Mazowe.

“The dualisation of the Harare-Mazowe road is a milestone for our capital investment,” he said.

“It will raise the GDP of our province and facilitate the flow of goods in and out of the region.

“Given its proximity to the New City, Mazowe is poised for remarkable growth.”

Minister Magomo said the Harare-Mazowe highway is significant in linking the major destinations in the province, mainly the border towns of Kanyemba and Mukumbura.

“Such excellent road networks will enhance the free flow of goods in and outside the province. However, our district of Mazowe will be remarkably poised for growth given its proximity to the new city (in Mt Hampden). Already, Mazowe’s tourism industry is witnessing a boom and we applaud President Mnangagwa for leaving no place and no one behind,” said Minister Magomo.

The Mazowe RDC is actively promoting major infrastructure projects that will enhance the district’s capabilities.

One of the most significant developments is a large mall under construction, which aims to provide residents with a modern shopping experience.

Further, plans for a modern public market are ongoing, designed to alleviate congestion caused by roadside vendors.

This facility will include stalls, storage, and waste management facilities, creating a more organised environment for local commerce.

The establishment of a designated bus terminal is in the works, which will feature loading bays, shelters, and organised routes.

This facility will improve safety for shoppers using public transport and reduce traffic disruptions caused by haphazard vehicle stops.

Alderman John Mudzonga, RDC chairman, said: “We are modernising in line with the trajectories of Vision 2030.

“Numerous projects are underway, including the nearly completed first phase of the Mazowe Walk Shopping Mall and a soon-to-be-finished service station. These developments are giving a modern impetus to the town.”

The transformation of Mazowe is not just about infrastructure; it is about creating opportunities. With new, state-of-the-art homes emerging in the lush hills, the district is envisioned as a hub for various economic activities.

The council is committed to implementing investor-friendly policies to attract investment and stimulate growth.

As Mazowe evolves, it is also focused on providing employment opportunities for youths and women, addressing pressing socio-economic challenges. The developments in tourism and infrastructure are expected to create jobs and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Mazowe’s journey from a troubled past to a promising future exemplifies the impact of strategic planning and investment.

The dualisation of major roads, coupled with significant infrastructure projects, positions the district as a key player in the region’s economic landscape.

With ongoing efforts, Mazowe is set to become one of the premier destinations for tourism and commerce in the province, ensuring that no one is left behind in the drive for growth and modernity.
