In the realm of photography, few names shine as brightly as American Annie Leibovitz, an icon whose work has redefined celebrity portraiture and visual storytelling.
Leibovitz is best known for her portrait photography.
Renowned for her strikingly intimate and imaginative portraits, Leibovitz has spent decades chronicling the lives of the famous and influential, capturing not only their outward beauty but also the complex emotions that lie beneath the surface.
Her ability to blend artistry with authenticity has made her a household name, with iconic images of figures like John Lennon, Queen Elizabeth II and the late Robin Williams, each photograph a testament to her unique vision and talent.
Leibovitz’s style is characterised by dramatic lighting, meticulous composition and a keen ability to elicit genuine emotion, transforming her subjects into larger-than-life characters within a carefully crafted narrative.
She has become a symbol of excellence in the field, inspiring countless aspiring photographers to explore the deeper stories behind the lens.
Among those captivated by her artistry is Zimbabwe renowned photographer Kundai Mandevere, an award-winning photographer whose journey began in the vibrant streets of Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe.
If you go on social media, looking at some of the local top celebrities, their immaculate pictures, be it weddings, social, funeral, engagement or even pregnancy shoot, Kundai has dominated the industry.
Well, in a world where images often flicker and fade, Kundai has cultivated a profound passion for capturing life’s most precious moments.
He artfully weaves his self-taught skills with an innate ability to convey the essence of humanity through his lens, creating a body of work that not only reflects the beauty of his subjects but also celebrates the rich tapestry of life itself.
With each click of the shutter, Kundai invites viewers into a realm where every photograph tells a story — a story of love, resilience and the fleeting nature of time.
“I never went to school of photography,” he said.
His journey is not merely a pursuit of art; it is a heartfelt quest to immortalise the moments that define us, transforming everyday experiences into stunning visual narratives that resonate with authenticity and depth.
His brand IKD, which he says, he created out of nowhere has become a household brand in the industry of photography.
Many people including top celebrities want a shoot with him.
But what makes him unique, what is the secret behind his pictures and how does he balance different attitudes and characters of celebrities?
The Herald on Saturday Lifestyle caught up with the unheralded photographer behind the lens of some of the famous images that many adore.
Like any journalist, one would not only want to spend a day with Kundai, but to also have an opportunity to be photographed, experience the techniques and skill of the talented photographer.
With a passion for capturing life’s most precious moments, Kundai has transformed his dreams into a breathtaking reality, blending his self-taught skills with an innate ability to tell stories through his lens. Kundai’s story is one of serendipity and discovery, a tale woven with the threads of his early life experiences.
He recalls, “Growing up in Chitungwiza, I was surrounded by the beauty of everyday life — the laughter of children playing, the vibrant colours of the markets and the warmth of community gatherings. It was in these moments that my love for photography ignited.”
The bustling streets of his hometown were his first canvas, where he learned to see the world not just as it is, but as it could be.
“I would say that I have been inspired much by societal settings before venturing into portraits and studio work,” he said.
Like Leibovitz, Kundai understood that photography is more than just capturing images; it is an art form that allows one to freeze a fleeting moment in time, allowing stories to unfold long after the shutter clicks.
A pivotal moment in Kundai’s journey occurred in January 2014, during a family wedding that would change the course of his life forever.
“It was at my cousin’s wedding, under the guidance of the renowned Australian photographer DJ Paine, that I took my very first picture. Holding that Canon 5D Mark II, I felt a surge of excitement coursing through me.
“The moment I pressed the shutter; I was transported into a world where I could express my vision.”
He added that the laughter and applause that followed his first shot echoed in his heart, affirming a calling that he had only begun to explore.
“In that instant, I realised that photography was not just a hobby; it was my passion, my purpose.”
Embracing the role of a self-taught artist, Kundai embarked on a journey of relentless learning and growth.
“I navigated the vast ocean of photography on my own, fuelled by dedication and an insatiable curiosity,” he reflects.
“Every photograph I took was a lesson, every critique a stepping stone toward excellence.”
His commitment to staying abreast of the latest trends and technology became a cornerstone of his artistry.
“In a world where visuals speak volumes, I knew I had to evolve continuously. The camera became my brush, and the world, my canvas.”
As Kundai honed his craft, he began capturing the beauty around him, from the tranquil landscapes of Zimbabwe to the vibrant personalities he encountered.
One photograph stands out among the rest, a cherished image of fashion icon and business woman Pokello Nare affectionately known as “Queen of Swag”, taken at the breathtaking white quarry.
“There was something truly special about that moment,” he recalls, his eyes sparkling with nostalgia.
“The way the light danced across her face, the serene backdrop —it was as if the universe conspired to create that perfect shot.”
This photograph not only solidified Kundai’s reputation but also deepened his connection to the art form, revealing the profound impact that a single image can have.
Kundai’s portfolio grew to include notable personalities like Natalie Mhandu, Jah Prayzah, Janet Manyowa, Madam Boss, Tanya The Therapist, Lorraine Guyo, Crooger, Stewart Nyamayaro, Scott Sakupwanya and Ric Chasers, among others, each session a new opportunity to delve into the stories behind the faces.
“Capturing these individuals was not merely about taking their pictures; it was about understanding their essence, their journey,” he explains.
“Every subject I photograph has a story to tell and it is my privilege to unveil that narrative through my lens.”
His ability to connect with his subjects is what sets him apart, allowing him to elicit genuine emotions that resonate deeply with viewers.
Yet, Kundai’s path has not been without its challenges.
As a male photographer, he occasionally finds himself in uncomfortable situations, particularly during events like bridal showers and pregnancy shoots.
“Initially, I felt out of place, navigating an environment dominated by women,” he admits.
“But I quickly learned that professionalism and respect are paramount in any field. By maintaining my composure, I could focus on what truly mattered — capturing the joy and love surrounding the occasion.”
His experiences have only strengthened his resolve, allowing him to enjoy capturing moments like pregnancy shoots, which he approaches with sensitivity and care.
“Fortunately, my family and friends understand my profession and respect the passion that drives me.”
Kundai’s daily life is a whirlwind of excitement and unpredictability, filled with the ebb and flow of creativity.
“Every day brings new challenges and opportunities,” he shares.
“I start by planning upcoming shoots, responding to client messages and editing photos.
Depending on the schedule, I might have a photoshoot, meet with clients, or attend events. Amidst the hustle, I carve out time for personal projects, always eager to learn new techniques.”
This blend of routine and spontaneity fuels his artistic spirit, pushing him to explore new horizons and expand his creative repertoire. When asked about his aspirations, Kundai’s eyes light up with enthusiasm. “I dream of working with icons like Denzel Washington and DJ Maphorisa,” he exclaims.
“The idea of collaborating with such talented individuals excites me, and I envision capturing their stories in a way that resonates with audiences worldwide.”
His ambitions extend beyond individual collaborations; he yearns to work with international fashion magazines, a goal that embodies his desire to elevate his craft to new heights.
Despite the challenges he faces — staying creative, managing the business side of photography and adapting to last-minute changes — Kundai remains steadfast in his commitment to his art.
“Every obstacle is an opportunity for growth,” he reflects.
“I believe it’s my ability to connect with my subjects, to capture genuine emotions and to tell stories through my lens that sets me apart.”
His unique style, characterised by an artistic vision that melds technical skill with profound empathy, continues to captivate audiences and elevate the art of photography.
Commenting on his role model, he said is inspired by Karl Taylor.
“This man has been in the industry for 25 years and I like his diligence and integrity on his work. His images have been published internationally and it is my dream to achieve the same.”
“Photography is not only art but also a serious professional job like doctor and lawyer, if taken seriously it sustains livelihoods. I have managed to buy a car. My charges vary from US$100 depending on mood board and ambience,” he said.
Kundai’s journey is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance.
From the vibrant streets of Chitungwiza to the world of celebrity photography, he has emerged as a beacon of creativity and inspiration.
As he continues to capture life’s fleeting moments, one thing is clear: Kundai’s story is far from over, and the world eagerly awaits the images yet to be unveiled through his lens.
