HIGH-FLYING traditional dance ensemble, Dapurahunanzva, has hailed their two-week sojourn in India as a triumphant voyage of cultural exchange after sharing the Zimbabwean culture with a diverse audience, while also learning from other talented creatives.

The group was in one of the world’s largest countries as they were part of invitees to perform and showcase their works at the Surajkund Craft Mela (Fair), which ended recently.

The event, which was attended by thousands of people drawn from across the globe, is a vibrant platform for Indian culture, showcasing the country’s rich diversity, crafts, cuisine and talent.

Dapurahunanzva left Zimbabwe on February 6 and came back on Tuesday.

The group immersed themselves in a vibrant atmosphere filled with diverse performances and cultural showcases.

They enjoyed a wide range of activities, from traditional music and dance to visual arts and local crafts.

The carnival also allowed them to connect with artistes from around the world, learn new techniques, and gain fresh perspectives on global cultural expressions.

Their participation, not only enriched their experience, but also deepened their appreciation for the arts, making it an unforgettable and fulfilling journey.

The group leader, Keavan Simomondo told Weekender Entertainment that the annual festival provided them with a unique opportunity to share the Zimbabwean culture with a diverse audience, while also learning from other talented artistes.

“During our time at the festival, we were struck by the incredible diversity of other nationalities and Indian culture. From the intricate crafts to the vibrant performances, every aspect of the festival was a testament to richness of culture and heritage. Our ensemble was grateful to be a part of this cultural exchange, sharing our own traditional Zimbabwean dances, music, and crafts with the audience. Our experience at the Surajkund Craft Mela was, not only a celebration of culture, but also a valuable learning opportunity.

“Performing in a new environment, with different stage settings and audience expectations, required us to be flexible and adapt quickly. We realised the importance of paying attention to every detail, from costumes to props, to ensure a polished and professional performance. Interacting with the audience, both on and off stage, helped us build a connection with them and create a more memorable experience.

“This made the Zimbabwean stand very popular, and we came third as a country among the more than 50 countries that took to the stage to perform. Of all the groups that performed, Dapuraunanzva Arts Ensemble had the most scintillating, powerful and vibrant dances for each of our daily performances. With multiple performances and activities, we had to manage our time effectively to ensure that we were well-prepared and rested,” said Simomondo.

He said the outfit returned to Zimbabwe with an avalanche of lessons.

“As we reflect on our experience at the Surajkund Craft Mela, we are mindful of areas where we can improve. We aim to refine our costume design and production to better reflect our Zimbabwean heritage. We will also continue to work on refining our choreography and performance skills to ensure a more polished and engaging show. We recognise the importance of effective marketing and promotion to reach a wider audience and build our brand.

“Our participation at the Surajkund Craft Mela was an enriching experience that allowed us to share our culture, learn from others, and grow as artists. We are grateful for the opportunity and look forward to applying the lessons we have learnt to future performances and cultural exchanges,” added Simomondo.
