YESTERDAY, we published the fascinating story of the residents of Westgate Area D in Harare who have overwhelmingly agreed to have their streets named using only English names.
The names have been approved by the Harare City Council.
They say these English street names highlight the difference between their neighbourhood and high-density suburbs.
They also argue that the local names will devalue the value of their suburb.
Its critics have dubbed it “Little England.”
This has split the community with other residents saying there should be some Shona and Ndebele names to celebrate the national identity.
The chosen street names are Raven Road, Grand Close, Durata Road, Temple Road, Melrose Road, Bath Drive, Orange Drive, Creek Close, Salmon Road, Teak Close, Earl Street, Litch Road, Eland Close, Hill Close, Rock Street, Peal Road and Tasker Road.
We, their friends at H-Metro, have noted that the same residents, who argue that Shona or Ndebele street names will bring down the value of their suburb, do not seem to worry about their local names.
So, in the spirit of helping them with their desired mission, for the sake of the value of their suburb, we have come up with possible English surnames which residents of “Little England” could also adopt.
We have come with a list of possible surnames, including the likes of Rhodes, Churchill, Maguire, Gerrard, for them to consider to ensure that their suburb has an exclusive English touch, which preserves its value.
