A SWIFT reaction by the Fire Brigade helped avert a major disaster when a fire broke out at a city service station during a decanting exercise yesterday.
With a sudden whoosh, flames flared up as fuel attendants at SOGO Service Station, along Seke Road, were decanting 10 000 litres of diesel.
Fortunately, the Fire Brigade reacted swiftly and managed to put out the fire before it spread throughout the whole premises.
The driver of the tanker was injured and quickly taken to the hospital by an ambulance.
Two cars and the fuel tanker were burnt extensively.
Some Drip Tech tanks (water bowsers) were also burnt.
Council spokesperson, Stanley Gama, said investigations were underway to determine what caused the fire.
“The Fire Brigade managed to put out the fire swiftly, I think if they were five minutes late all the surrounding buildings could have been destroyed.
“But their swift action really made a difference.
“Three vehicle were destroyed beyond recognition and the driver of the tanker was injured.
“I want to thank the Fire Brigade team for an excellent job in containing the fire.”
Eye witnesses, who spoke to H-Metro at the scene, said they believed that if the ire fighters had arrived late, even by five minutes, there could have been a disaster of frightening magnitude.
“The tanker was offloading fuel but we heard that one of the bosses and the driver were having a quarrel because the driver was telling the boss that he cannot offload because there was a fire spark, the boss was adamant and we think that is what caused the fire,” the eyewitness said.
