A security guard who had been on the run since March after stealing more than $13,000 from a cash-in-transit vehicle he was accompanying to a bank has been arrested.Lloyd Munsaka’s days as a fugitive ended last week when police arrested him. He appeared in court on Friday facing allegations of theft.
Munsaka, 29, was employed by Guardian Security Company.
The prosecutor, Taurai Hondoyemoto, told the court that on March 28, Munsaka tricked his colleague and told him that he had a boil on his backside so as to sit at the back of the truck where the cash boxes were.
“Munsaka collected boxes of money from TV Sales and Hire and signed for the cash. He told his unsuspecting colleague Caswell Nyamakanga that he had a boil on his buttocks and preferred sitting on the spare wheel at the back of the truck they were travelling in.
“Munsaka then sat on top of a spare wheel, which was close to the cash box compartment. While there, he partially blocked the cash box to make sure Nyamakanga did not have complete view. He then opened the cash boxes using the keys while still in transit,” said Hondoyemoto.
Munsaka was left at Standard Chartered Bank where he was supposed to bank the cash.
He, however, allegedly left the empty boxes in the bank and disappeared with a total of $13,559.
Munsaka was only arrested last week but the money was not recovered.
Munsaka appealed for bail, saying he wanted to seek medical attention after sustaining injuries following an accident in a police vehicle.
However, magistrate Sibongile Msipa remanded Munsaka in custody to June 10, 2014.
She advised him to get treatment from prison.
