Fugitive robbery suspect nabbed

Munyaradzi Nevanji of Zvishavane is believed to be the ringleader and was arrested last week following a tip off.
He was brought to court on Friday charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and armed robbery.

Nevanji (27) was not asked to plead when he appeared before the magistrate Mr Carrington Karidzagundi.
He was remanded in custody to January 10 for trial.
He is facing another charge for illegal possession of a firearm, whose trial date has been set for January 13.

Charges against Nevanji arose on November 17 last year, when he teamed up with three other accomplices still at large and went to the Roman Catholic Church in Dulibadzimu suburb.
The gang was armed with a star pistol and another unknown firearm.

They allegedly broke into the priest’s house through the front door. While inside Nevanji pointed a gun to the man of cloth threatening to shoot him if he failed to comply with their orders.
They force-marched him to his office and ordered him to open the safe.

For fear of his life Fr Greber opened the safe and gave them US$2 000, 1 500 Francs and R4 000.
The gang ransacked the house and took away two laptops, two digital cameras, two Nokia Cell phones and his driver’s licence.

The men took the victim outside where they tied his feet and hands using a rope before they disappeared into the darkness.
He later managed to untie himself and filed a police report. Nevanji was arrested this year and the Star pistol was recovered from him. The stolen property is yet to be accounted for.
