Fugitive unlicensed driver faces culpable homicide charge

Jeremia Marembo pleaded guilty to culpable homicide, driving without a licence and failure to report an accident when he was arraigned before Harare magistrate Ms Gamu Siwardi. He admitted to fleeing the scene of the accident, arguing that he was not stable and was scared after the accident on realising that he had run over a person. Marembo was remanded in custody for sentence after prosecutor Ms Barbra Ndoro opposed bail saying that the unlicensed driver was a flight risk after having been on the run since the day of the accident.

It is the State’s case that on March 5 at around 6pm, Marembo was driving a Toyota Hiace registration number ABN3322 along Robert Mugabe Road towards Eastlea.

At VID Eastlea, he allegedly ran over a pedestrian who was crossing the road.

The court heard that the pedestrian died at Parirenyatwa Hospital due to injuries sustained in the accident. Marembo ran away from the scene and went to Beatrice where he got a job at a farm as a general worker.
