Funds stall hotel project

which Parliament bought to accommodate legislators, a Parliament official has said.

Parliament bought the hotel for an undisclosed amount to ease accommodation challenges but two years down the line the hotel is still lying idle.
Authorities at Parliament now fear the hotel might become a white elephant, as renovations are moving at a snail’s pace.
Deputy Clerk of Parliament, Mr Kennedy Chokuda, recently said they had submitted bids to Treasury for funding.

He, however, said the project was being handled by the Ministry of Public Works.
“We submitted a budget to Treasury under PSIP for the 2013 national budget,” said Mr Chokuda.

“We are hoping that the money will be disbursed as a stand alone vote.”
Mr Chokuda, however, said the renovations would be administered by the Ministry of Public Works.

“They are the ones who would be in a better position to tell when work at the hotel would be completed,” he said.
Parliament is expected to save more than US$20 000 per sitting should it start using the hotel, which would be converted into offices, committee rooms and accommodation for MPs.

Parliament owes more than US$700 000 to several hotels in Harare.
Accommodation is Parliament’s major cost driver.
