Further detention for suspect in US$158k mining equipment theft

THE State has obtained a warrant for the continued detention of Tendai Banda, a suspect in an unlawful entry and theft case, involving mining equipment worth more than US$158 000, in Southerton.

Banda is alleged to have been caught on camera stealing from the firm along Birmingham Road, and is believed to have sold some of the goods in Kadoma.

The State has requested for his further detention in police custody to allow for the recovery of the stolen items and the apprehension of his accomplices.

Banda and his gang allegedly gained entry into Fideliqiup Mining Machinery (Private) Limited by using a duplicate key and made away with mining equipment worth US$158 201.

They were captured on CCTV committing the offence.

The State said at around 8pm on February 21, Banda together with his accomplices, Nyasha Ebenezer Chapeyama, William Nyika, Edson Saidon, Franco, Nero, Mukuwe and Jamukoko, gained entry into Fideliquip Mining Machinery using a duplicate key and went to the warehouse.

It was alleged that they stole mining equipment comprising 3x3kw diesel generators, 31 water pumps, 13 30m hosepipes, 63 grinding shafts, 79 sacks of bolts, 6 petrol pumps, 20 water pumps, 25 grinding mill belts, 80 spanners, 50 drill beats, 9 diesel generators, a 25-piece lubricator, 90 Piston Rings and a borehole pump.

They allegedly loaded the loot into their vehicle and drove off.

The gang sold the stolen equipment and shared the proceeds among themselves.
