A LOCAL cleric has urged children to respect and take care of their parents and not allow technology to destroy the family fabric.
Pastor Ernest Manyika, of the Kingdom Fire International Ministries, warned young people not to forget where they come from.
He said new ICTs and social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and many others, had done more harm than good to the family set-up and society at large.
He said young people had become egocentric, selfish and self-centred.
“We have noticed this misnomer and realised that as a church we need to take part in re-building families at a time when parents and their children are no longer united as before.
“We read a lot of stories on social media whereby children accuse their parents of witchcraft once they are old.
“Some do not even fend for their parents despite having more than enough resources for survival.
“As a church, we organised and encouraged our members to buy blankets for their parents and also to invite them to church so that they can give them the blankets in return for blessings.
“It is these small gestures of love that can make a huge difference in our lives and as you have seen, emotions were high as parents were receiving the blankets.
“The children were prayed for and blessed by their parents.
“It is imperative to understand that in everything we do in this life, we need the blessings of our parents and we need to cherish them while they are still alive as they sacrificed a lot for us to be where we are today.”
He said the intention of his ministry is to preach unity and selflessness among ordinary people and the restoration of the extended family.
