GABRIEL Nyoni has joined South African First Division side, Cape Umoya, days after officially making it known to the public that he had parted ways with Maritzburg United.
The former Highlanders vice-captain announced through social media on Friday that he was now a Cape Umoya player. His new team just finished eleventh in the South African National First Division. In making his announcement, the speedy forward said he was impressed by the way Cape Umoya operates.
“I have officially joined Cape Umoya United. I am completely in love with the purpose through which they do things. I am ready to work. Thanks to everyone who continue supporting my work,’’ posted Nyoni.
After weeks of speculation about his status at Maritzburg United, the player and the club on Sunday confirmed that Nyoni had been released by the Team of Choice. Maritzburg United and Nyoni blamed injuries, which prevented him from taking to the field of play for a lengthy period as the main reason for his departure from the Pietermitzburg based side.
Cape Umoya are fairly new on the South African football scene as they came into existence in 2018 after taking over the franchise rights of the now defunct Platinum Stars who were relegated from the Absa Premiership at the end of the 2017/18 season.
Nyoni joined Maritzburg United in July last year from Cape United, a few months after he had left Bosso for Makepekepe. He had spent five years at Highlanders.
