PLYMOUTH Argyle defender Brendan Galloway is set for a spell on the sidelines after the English League One football club confirmed he will undergo a routine hernia procedure.

The operation was scheduled for yesterday, with the player expected to be out of action for approximately four weeks.

The 28-year-old Zimbabwe international initially sustained what head coach Tom Cleverley described as an abdominal issue during the later stages of Argyle’s 2-1 defeat at Stockport County on January 31.

He subsequently missed the following match but was in contention for a return against Blackpool this past weekend.

However, a setback in training on Friday changed those plans.

Cleverley said Galloway felt a recurrence of the problem while training and that a planned pain-suppressing injection earlier in the week had not been sufficiently effective.

“We knew he had a hernia,” Cleverley said.

“He had an injection in the week to try to suppress the pain, which you can play with. The injection can have a really positive effect or not have much of an effect.

“It obviously didn’t have much of an effect. We have to just do the procedure on Monday, and hopefully, he will be back mid next month.”

Galloway’s absence meant recent loan signing Wes Harding, a deadline-day acquisition, stepped in at left-back for the Pilgrims’ impressive 4-0 victory over Blackpool.

The win lifted Argyle to 12th in the League One table.

A product of the MK Dons Academy, who has also had spells with Everton and Luton Town, Galloway has been a regular for Argyle this season, making 20 league appearances (17 of them starts).

He is out of contract with the club at the end of the current campaign.
