Garanganga sinks Dzuwa

Dzuwa in a thrilling encounter at Harare Sports Club yesterday.
Garanganga beat Dzuwa in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 to progress to today’s final.
The All-Africa Games gold medalist proved too good for his opponent, dominating all the sets, as he set the tone of the match.
Garanganga was impressed with yesterday’s match and said although he took time to settle down, it was a good show.
“I settled down a little late. I didn’t focus much on his experience, I just came out and played.
“Even when I am playing other experienced players I just want to play.
“Gradually the competition is improving and it usually does as we get towards the finals,” said Garanganga.
His opponent, Dzuwa, was satisfied with his performance despite losing the showdown.
“I played well in the first set but I didn’t maintain it. I was also not making it on my serve and he (Takanyi) was making good returns in the second set.
“I gave it my best but at the end of the day he is the top seed.
“My strategy was to come in a lot but at the end he managed to adjust and he played well,” said Dzuwa.
Garanganga said he was ready for today’s final.
He will take on Genius Chidzikwe.
Chidzikwe defeated third seed Malcolm Mutungamiri 7-6 (3), 0-6, 6-3 in a tightly-contested match.
Mutungamiri started on a positive note, leading in the first set but Chidzikwe came back to win the set in a tiebreak.
The veteran player went on to lose the second set but it was not yet over as he came back again to claim the last set to book his place in the final.
In the women’s competition, defending champion Valeria Bhunu stormed into the finals when she dismissed Latifah Yasini 6-0, 6-0.
Bhunu has a date against Fadzai Mawisire who overpowered Pauline Chawafambira 7-5, 6-3 in the other semi-final match.
In the doubles matches Chawafambira and Yasini beat Tariro Dembo and Zarah Finnigan 6-4, 6-2 while Nyasha Munyoro and Rumbidzai Mapani overpowered Micheala Lock and Micheala Baker 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 in the quarterfinals.
Vimbai Ugaro partnered Nancy Onia to beat the pair of Wendy Rudhu and Chloe Oconnor 6-2, 6-0.
Mawisire and Cynthia Sibanda also had a good day as they defeated Rumbidzai Ugaro and Katlego Gouwe 6-2, 6-4. The tournament ends today with the finals in both the singles and doubles matches.
