Gardener buys two residential plots using stolen money

A gardener from Greendale is accused of stealing US$70,000 from his boss and confessed nearly a year later after spending almost half of the money. This was revealed during a court hearing in Harare yesterday.

Collin Mubvumbi, 43, appeared before Magistrate Ms. Sharon Rakafa on theft charges. He was kept in custody and will return to court today for a bail hearing.

Mubvumbi worked for Mr. Chakanyuka Nyatanga as a gardener from 2013 until September last year. During that time, he had legal access to Nyatanga’s home.

In November 2023, Nyatanga hid $70,000 in a fitted wardrobe. Prosecutor Mr. Takudzwa Mutyavaviri stated that Mubvumbi noticed where the money was hidden.

After Nyatanga and his family left the house, Mubvumbi allegedly entered the bedroom, unscrewed part of the wardrobe, and took the money.

Months later, Mubvumbi admitted to Nyatanga that he had stolen the money and returned US$32,800 of what he had left.

He reportedly used part of the stolen funds to buy two residential plots in Phase 17, Eastview, Goromonzi. (Afrogazette)
