ZIMBABWE senior netball women, the Gems, opened their African Championships campaign in style by thwarting Namibia 48-36 Monday morning.

The tournament in Malawi had the two sides face off barely a week after clashing at the Celtic Cup in Scotland where Zimbabwe also emerged winners.

At the championships in Lilongwe, Goal Defender Kelly Muyambo was crowned Player of the Match.

Muyambo, paired with veteran Tanaka Makusha, played a key role in keeping the Namibian shooters at bay after trailing the Desert Jewels 9-11 in the first quarter.

Returning in the second stanza, the Gems made changes, with youngsters Thandazile Ndlovu and Nicole Muzanenhamo replacing Sharon Bwanali and Ursula Ndlovu.

The youngsters brought life, changing the complexion of the game as Zimbabwe became unstoppable to the end.
