Gender based violence survivors turn to online platform

MORE than 1 500 men and women who were emotionally, economically, physically or verbally abused in their marriages have turned to an online platform for advice and tips on how to get over trauma.

The online platform, code named “Love tutorials” is run on WhatsApp group and Facebook page. The social media platforms are run by a group of counsellors, psychologists who all report to David Mlangeni who is the Love tutorials founder.

David Mlangeni explained how he started the Love tutorials platforms.

“I was approached by a number of men and women from different church denominations seeking counselling services saying they were abused by their loved ones. I had to talk to counsellors and psychologists then we started the Love tutorial which now has more than 1500 members,” he said

Some of the women and men who spoke to B- Metro said the online platforms have helped in restoring their marriage.

“I had to join the love tutorials WhatsApp group at the advice of my friend because I was going through a sad chapter in my marriage at the hands of my husband who was in the habit of insulting me whenever I made a mistake or at the worst he would hit me with anything that he laid his hands on,” said Nonsikelelo Sibanda.

She went on to say the group administrator assigned a counsellor who engaged her.

“Before I joined the WhatsApp group I was a bitter and hopeless woman but after some counselling sessions I had to pick myself up and the counsellor managed to talk to my abusive husband and held a joint counselling session with us which helped in restoring our marriage which was on the verge of collapse,” she said.

Another beneficiary of the Facebook platform said her husband was stingy with his money but the platform had assisted her to find a way around her problem.

“My husband used to give me inadequate money to buy groceries, at times he would not give me money at all saying he was not paid. Due to that I led a miserable life until I turned to Love tutorial Facebook page. I learnt that as a woman I had to supplement my husband‘s income.

Now I run a flea market and I also sell airtime. As a result our marriage is now a sweet affair and my husband is no longer a monster that he used to be as he is part of the platform as well,” she said.

Dumisani Nyathi said he would always engage in a fist fight with his wife.

“Whenever we had arguments at home we would fight. I got emotionally drained as stress took its toll on me. I had to phone one of the counsellors on Love tutorial WhatsApp group, she engaged us. Now we find better ways of solving problems and we no longer fight,” he said at the nod of his wife.

Mlangeni said next year in January they will hold workshops that will focus on stress management, love and sex in marriage, budgeting and time management.
