The Gender Commission draft Bill has been approved by Cabinet and is expected to be tabled before Parliament next month.
The Gender Commission aims to address gender disparities in various sectors.
“The draft was approved by the Cabinet and now awaits debating in the Parliament on the first of July so that it would become a gazetted Bill,” Women’s Affairs, Gender and Community Development Minister Oppah Muchinguri told The Herald last week.
“We are in the process of mobilising female parliamentarians and other relevant stakeholders so that we will see to it that the commission becomes a success. In all sectors, we will be looking at the distribution of positions and we expect at least equal representation in decision-making positions in industry, private or public sector.”
She said the commission would strive to advance the gender equality agenda in all sectors. “That commission is going to leave no stone unturned as it will deal with all those sectors that are lagging behind in recognising women’s worth and capability especially those that suppress women through sexual harassment or abuse,” Minister Muchinguri said.
The Gender Commission is a requirement under the new Constitution.
Once constituted, the Gender Commission would be the third in Africa after South Africa and Kenya.
