This week we spoke to teenagers about the issue of failing English and Shona at ‘O’ Level. We wanted to know what the issue was…although I think we know…too much shortcuts on chat…here is what some teens had to say.
Yo Sissy Annie, I’m Yemu, I think we fail English because it is not our first language. Yes, we have teenagers in school teaching us English, but the teachers themselves cannot pronounce the English words properly. I usually get 50 percent in Shona, it is not easy to write, it is a hard language to write. And also at home we speak both Shona and English, so ah!

Hie Sissy Annie, I am Tindo, I fail English because I do not speak it at home or with my friends. So the only time I speak or write it is when I am in class and even then the teachers mix English and Shona, so I will fail. I am in a school that speaks majorly shone, so English is just another subject. As for Shona, yes, it is my language, but it is hard to write. I can speak it, but writing is not easy and the teachers do not seem to have patience with us.

Hie Sissy Annie, my name is Tahillah, I failed Shona at ‘O’ Level because it will not benefit me when I leave the country. No other country speaks Shona, so why should I try it? I do not want to stay in this country any way, so it won’t help me. I speak it at home here and there, but I can’t cry because I failed the written exam. For English I passed because it is a universal language, but many of my friends failed because they are used to writing shorthand in their chats, so they no longer know how to write properly.

Hi Sissy Annie, my name is Shepherd. As teens I think we are not focused. Everywhere in the world you find teenagers can speak at least two languages, but our generation find it okay to speak half of each language.
In fact, I am the child of a prominent person, but my parents speak English at home because they say I will be going for university overseas. So seriously I will not make an effort to speak a language I can’t take with me overseas.
Hi Sissy Annie, can I send the question back out to those who are asking? Which other country will I be speaking Shona? At least Ndebele, I can take it to South Africa and Ndau I can take it to Mozambique, but Shona? Let us be honest, we need to be universal here and stop making kids take up subjects just because it brushes our pride as a nation. As born frees we want to be universal and Shona is not universal. So why shove it down my throat! I speak it at home, that is good enough for me.

Hi Sissy Annie, my name is Tendai. I love Shona, just like I love every other language spoken in this nation. But I think it is unfair to punish us for failing Shona because by the way, which degree will I need to have Shona when I go to university? I think to be fair, Government should introduce all the other official spoken languages in this country into the school curriculum because Zimbabwe is made up of all these tribes and races. Then us teens can choose which language to do and its benefits.

Well, there we have it teens. This is some of the feedback we got from you guys. My advice is regardless of what benefit you think a subject has later in life, if it is on your curriculum, it is up to you and no one else to make sure you do your ultimate best to pass that subject. If you are struggling, I suggest you try and get assistance from those people in your school that are passing it or if your parents can afford it, go for extra lessons. No matter what excuse you give, at the end of the day, you are the one who will be affected later in life. Born free does not mean, life is going to hand you everything for free…just see how many 20 somethings have died because of their love for free things. Do not become a statistic, become a somebody.
