Ozil sets new Premier League record

ARSENAL midfielder Mesut Ozil has re-written the Premier League record books, becoming the player with the most chances created in a single season in the League’s history. The 27-year-old has been in fine form for the Gunners this season, his creative and quick-thinking play the origin of 18 Arsenal goals in the League thus far.In his side’s 0-0 draw against Sunderland over the weekend, Ozil created five scoring opportunities, taking his total so far this season to 137 chances created, surpassing Frank Lampard’s 2008/09 tally of 134 to become the highest chance-creater in a single Premier League season, as confirmed by the Premier league itself.

This since the 2003/04 season, when such statistics began being accumulated.

As defined by Opta, a “chance created” is “an assist or the final pass or pass-cum-shot leading to the recipient of the ball having an attempt at goal without scoring”.

Ozil’s 137 chances created so far puts him three ahead of Lampard’s total, as the German now chases Thierry Henry’s 2002/03 record tally of 20 assists for the season. He is two assists off with three matches left in the campaign.
