WITH over four decades of making waves and creating space for emerging artists on the local art scene, Dominic Benhura’s work has proved his studio is a place where art can thrive.
Speaking to H-Metro, Benhura said one of his best works was when he sculpted using pieces of chip stone as a recycling process.
“My experience of over four decades of sculpting makes it a bit easier to navigate around hurdles even though challenges will always arise, which are private.
“I still get my inspiration from family themes but I have been doing animals and insects of late. Been doing semi abstract works with the addition of colours.”
He is a workaholic.
“I like working every day of the year and do not like it when circumstances beyond my control keep me away from work.
“I do not have a network of artists, but I support arts centres and individuals with materials and advice for those interested.
“It’s natural to get both positive and negative criticism, it shows people follow you.
“I like working from my studio, since I can work anytime of the day as and when inspiration/ideas arise. One of my favourite pieces was made out of bits and pieces of chip away stone.
“It is a recycling process.”
Currently, he is working on a sculpture titled “Bison and Calf”.
