Ghana in must-win encounter

GHANA defender Jonathan Mensah says the team is calm and focused on grinding out a win against Algeria today. The Black Stars, after their opening game defeat to Senegal, find themselves in a must-win situation against Africa’s highest ranked Algeria in their second group C game of the 2015 Afcon. With fans worrying that anything less than a win will push Ghana out of the Equatorial Guinea competition, the centre-back says the Stars camp is relaxed and focused on doing its bit to advance to the next stage.

“We have to play three games (in the group) and we have lost the first one. We have gone back to the drawing board, saw our mistakes and are keen on building on it,” Mensah opened at the Ghana team Press conference on Wednesday.

“I don’t think any of us is afraid (of the current group situation). We have been in this situation before. I think in my first Afcon in 2010, Ghana lost 3-1, we relaxed and came back strongly to win against Burkina and advanced. We will just keep our calm and play our game to win,” he added.

The Evian TG man highlighted the lessons from the Senegal defeat: “In our first game, we squandered many chances and it affected us. I think a similar thing happened to South Africa, they couldn’t take their chances and Algeria punished them. We have learnt the need to finish off games to avoid setbacks,” he said.
