Speaking from her hospital bed, Mrs Chirau, who has no history of diabetes, said her previous child was born weighing 4,430 kg.
“My first child was born weighing 4,430 kg, but this one is too big.
“I still do not believe that I have delivered such a big boy,” she said.
Sister Petronella Mugabe from the ma-ternity ward at the hospital said although women, who deliver big babies are normally diabetic, Mrs Chirau is not.
“We are testing her and the baby for diabetes and our tests so far indicate that she is not diabetic,” she said.
Sister Mugabe said the baby could have taken after his mother who is also big.
“Normally babies are expected to be born weighing an average of 2,5 kg and 3,5kg. There are, however, few cases in which babies are born weighing between 4kg and 5kg but this one has broken the record,” she said.
Sister Mugabe said as much as she can remember, the biggest child was born weighing 5,5 kg at a hospital in Harare.
