Gifford High gears up for Byo Central Inter-schools athletics competitions

Today they will play host to an inter-house competition at the school and convener Collet Murombo said they were hoping to come up with a competitive team that will withstand the tightly contested district competition.

“We want to use the inter-house competitions to come up with a strong team that will compete next weekend. We are hoping to excel during the competitions,” he said.

Gifford will be fighting for the top finish against Milton, Hamilton, Founders, Montrose, Girls College, Eveline, Townsend, Bulawayo Adventist Secondary School and Dominican Convent.

After the inter-district competitions the provincial competitions will follow thereafter on the 28th of March at Ihlathi Secondary School.

Murombo said they were looking forward to having a good field day.

“We hope we will be able to come up with a team that is bigger and better than last year. We will be scouting for talent from the new students who joined us this year,” he said.

Mpopoma, Magwegwe, Emakhandeni Secondary and Nkulumane High Schools will also be having their inter-house athletics competitions as they intensify preparations for the inter-schools meet.

Eveline and Pumula High Schools held their competitions last week and are now busy with the school teams in preparation for the next phase.

In Matabeleland North, George Silundika High School has also intensified preparations for their   inter-district athletics competitions that are set for Nyamandlovu Secondary School on 9 March.

Today Imbizo, Amhlophe, Insukamini and Amawaba — the four houses in the school — will participate in the inter-house competitions to select a team that will battle it out among seven other schools in the Umguza East zone.

The headmaster of the school, Banda Ncube, said preparations were going on well as they look forward to a good show at the inter-schools.

“We will be having inter-house competitions here tomorrow (today) in preparations for the inter-schools set for the 8 February before we engage in the inter-district competitions on the 9 March then finally the inter-provincials which will be held in Harare,” Ncube said.

Sigonde, Mahlothova, Mathabiswana, Sawmills, Nyamandlovu, St James as well as Mnondu and the hosts will be competing for a slot in the zonal competitions while on the same day Sojini, John Tallach, Madlelenyoni and Nhlambabaloyi, will assemble at David Livingstone for the Umguza West Zone competitions.
