Traditional music band Black Spear will tomorrow make their debut performance at Gijima Sports Bar in the city centre at a show that is promising to be a thriller.
The joint has become the new home for traditional music, hosting the likes of Mbira DzeNharira over the past few months.
This weekend will bring a whole new experience according to Black Spear manager Taurai Zhuwao.
“We are looking forward to the upcoming show and traditional music fans should expect the best. Our music incorporates marimba and mbira music hence our decision to call it Marimbira music. It is popular amongst people of all age groups so people should come and enjoy,” he said. The seven-member band has been performing regularly at different joints in Mabvuku were they have a strong fan base. Now under new management, they are eager to spread their territory beyond the high-density suburb.
“We are now working with new promoters, Hanics Investment and our aim is to spread the music to more people. The reception that we have had in the past is good with some calling our sound Chimurenga music and cultural music,” said the band’s lead vocalist Kabau “Jati Mukaranga” Matimba. The band has been in existence for over 10 years with their star shining at the 2005 International Music Festival in Malawi.
They represented the country well, coming out on third place at the prestigious festival. Their music is full of life with supporting instruments like the marimba, mbira, drums, keyboard and powerful vocals.
They perform at various functions including weddings, corporate functions and other live performances
