Zimbabwean fashion entrepreneur and cultural advocate Gilmore Qhawe Khumalo, popularly known as Gilmore Tee, has secured another significant international honour after being appointed to the judging panel of the Global Creative Graduate Showcase 2026, a prestigious initiative by ARTS THREAD in partnership with Google Arts & Culture.

The appointment places the founder and creative director of Paper Bag Africa among an esteemed group of global industry experts responsible for identifying and celebrating the world’s most promising emerging creatives. Gilmore Tee will assess entries in the highly competitive Fashion, Accessories and Textiles categories, bringing an African perspective to one of the world’s leading graduate showcases.

Now in its seventh edition, the Global Creative Graduate Showcase has become the world’s largest platform dedicated exclusively to graduating art and design students. The initiative is open to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students completing their studies during the 2025/26 academic year, offering participants unparalleled international exposure and networking opportunities.

Over the past six years, the showcase has attracted more than 30 000 graduating creatives from over 700 art and design institutions across 130 countries, cementing its reputation as a launch pad for the next generation of global designers, artists and innovators.

For Zimbabwe’s fashion industry, Khumalo’s appointment represents more than personal achievement. It underscores the growing influence of African voices in shaping global conversations around design, sustainability and innovation.

As the driving force behind Paper Bag Africa, Khumalo has built a reputation as one of the continent’s most passionate champions of African fashion. Through his work, he has consistently advocated for sustainable design, regional manufacturing and the commercial value of African storytelling within the global fashion marketplace.

His career has been defined by efforts to create opportunities for emerging designers, strengthen local fashion ecosystems and facilitate international trade links that connect African craftsmanship with global markets. In doing so, he has helped elevate the visibility of African fashion while encouraging designers to embrace cultural authenticity without compromising commercial appeal.

Beyond business, Khumalo has emerged as a leading voice in the preservation and promotion of cultural identity through fashion. He has demonstrated how indigenous aesthetics and traditional craftsmanship can thrive alongside contemporary design and international trends.

Among his most impactful initiatives is the #IWearMyCultureZW campaign, which has inspired Zimbabweans to celebrate their heritage through fashion while encouraging greater appreciation of locally produced garments and cultural expression.

His selection as an international judge is therefore viewed as a natural progression for a creative leader whose work has consistently centred on empowering African talent and amplifying the continent’s creative narrative on the global stage.

Speaking after the announcement, Khumalo described the opportunity as both an honour and a responsibility.
“It is an absolute honour to join the international judging panel for the Global Creative Graduate Showcase 2026. Africa is teeming with raw, ground-breaking design talent that deserves global visibility.

“I look forward to reviewing the work of the world’s finest graduating students and advocating for fresh, innovative voices that challenge conventional boundaries in fashion and textiles.

“I would also encourage Zimbabwean and African institutions to participate and allow their students to be part of this incredible global opportunity that will serve as a launch pad for young designers looking to break into the international market,” he said.

At a time when diversity and representation are increasingly shaping the future of creative industries, Khumalo’s appointment signals a growing recognition of African expertise in defining global standards of excellence. It also highlights the importance of evaluating design through diverse cultural lenses, ensuring that African aesthetics and knowledge systems are recognised alongside established Western perspectives.

For Zimbabwe’s fashion fraternity, the appointment is another milestone in the industry’s growing international footprint. More importantly, it reinforces the country’s reputation as a breeding ground for innovative creative talent capable of influencing the future of global fashion.
