TEN-year-old Margaret Nyamukondiwa is part of the elite ladies “Team Zimbabwe” for the 2014 edition of the three nations’ A and B Triangular golf tournament that got under way in Botswana yesterday. The tournament will run for one week. A member of the Wingate Golf Club in Harare, Nyamukondiwa started her golfing career in 2012 from a handicap of 36 but in just two years, she is now on 20.
She has been travelling with other lady golfers to provincial strokeplay tournaments and is proving to be a gem after the reigning champions Batsirai Tilowakuti and Yolanda Mubaiwa.
A confident Zimbabwean squad, whose A Division is captained by Loveness Changavengerwa with the Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union president Nancy Dube captaining the B Division, will battle for honours against Zambia and hosts Botswana.
Commenting on the squad ZLGU publicity officer Evelyn Maisvoreva said: “We are confident the team will do the nation proud.”
Some of the players in the squad include Bulawayo’s Lorraine Huwa and Rodnah Mutasa as well as Stella Feldman from the Midlands.
The original concept of the A Division Triangular tournament was conceived by the Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union as a training ground for prospective players. The tournament was first staged in Kenya in 1991 between Zimbabwe, Zambia and Kenya with the Zimbabwe team winning. The three countries played for the Non-Ferrous Metals of Ndola trophy.
In 1994 Kenya decided to run their own triangular version for Eastern African countries as travelling to Zimbabwe or Zambia was proving expensive.
