TRAGEDY struck Mungazi Village in Nyazura when a seven-year-old girl died from injuries sustained after a truck hit her while trying to cross the road along the Nyazura-Chivhu Highway.
The incident occurred yesterday around 7am.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said Beverly Chadyemunga was hit by a Shacman truck that was being driven by Denis Dishun (40).
“Dishun was driving along the Nyazura-Chivhu Highway heading towards Chivhu with one passenger on board. Upon reaching the 160km peg, Beverly who was behind a stationary bus, suddenly crossed the road from the right side. She was hit and fell on the left side of the road,” he said.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said the driver stopped about 50 meters from the scene.
“Chadyemunga sustained serious head injuries and died on the spot,” he said.
Rusape police attended the scene and the body was taken to Rusape General Hospital for a post-mortem.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged road users to exercise caution at all times.
“We urge the public to exercise caution when crossing busy roads, especially when vehicles are approaching. Parents and guardians should also educate children on road safety to prevent such tragedies,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
